What is the place and the role of the public school in a democratic society? The discussion about the public school in the current democratic society is inscribed in several fronts and there is some difficulty in updating its profile according to the new demands to which it has been submitted. Its mission, which is no longer limited to the triad of reading, writing, and counting, nor to a set of professional learning directly related to the world of work, is also to train participatory citizens, informed, competent, supportive and individually responsible for the collective interest and good.
