Abstract

MARTINS, Ana. A look at rock'n'roll and its social representations in contemporary Portugal. Sociologia [online]. 2022, vol.44, pp.85-108.  Epub Mar 30, 2023. ISSN 0872-3419.  https://doi.org/10.21747/08723419/soc44a5.

The association between rock music and risky behaviours is widely known and socially recognized, especially that ones related to sex, alcohol and the use of other legal and illegal substances. Like it happened in the international reality, with greater emphasis on Anglo-Saxon countries, in Portugal rock music also encompasses a broad process of production and reproduction of moral panic, which has accompanied the development of Portuguese society. In this article, we intend to present a brief analysis and reflection of the media representations about the epitome “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” in Portugal, in two newspapers, during the period of the Portuguese rock boom with the aim of highlighting the existing social representations associated with it.

Keywords : rock’n’roll; social representations; Portugal.
