Abstract

CORREIA, João Paulo et al. Etiological Investigation of Stroke in Young Adults. Medicina Interna [online]. 2018, vol.25, n.3, pp.213-223. ISSN 0872-671X.  https://doi.org/10.24950/rspmi/revisao/200/3/2018.

The incidence of stroke in young adults has been increasing in recent decades, resulting in more and more hospitalizations. Likewise, the weight of traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle seems to be increasing, in detriment of other rarer risk factors, classically associated with stroke in this age group. The list of possible etiologies is extensive and the identification of risk factors does not lead to a complete etiological understanding of stroke. Therefore, the approach to this pathology requires not only the adequate use of complementary diagnostic tests but also hierarchical thinking. In this article, the authors present a review of the risk factors and etiologies of stroke in the young adult, focusing on some clinical and diagnostic aspects that are useful for the etiological investigation of these patients in clinical practice.
