Modern medical science was born in the Renaissance, being consensual that the founding work is De Humani Corporis Fabrica (1543), of the Belgian doctor Andreas Vesalius. In addition to this and other Latin books written by Vesalius, this article presents others in French, left by the French physician his contemporary Ambroise Paré. The two greatest Portuguese medical doctors of the time were both New Christians and both lived the experience of exile: Amatus Lusitanus in Europe, and Garcia da Ort, in India. Their main works are also described, respectively Curatorium Medicinalium centuriae and  Colóquio dos Simples, e drogas he cousas medicinais da Índia. Finally, the medical press in Portugal in the 16th century is referred to, namely the main works of the professors of Medicine at the University of Coimbra. As reference library the General Library of the University of Coimbra, which includes the King’s John Library (“Joanina”), was chosen, being here listed the most notable medical books of that period which are part of its collections.
