Excluding cases of secondary peritonitis due to perforation of a hollow viscous, abdominal abscess or peri­toneal dialysis, the isolation of fungus from cirrhotic ascites is a very rare event. In cirrhotic ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is one of the most usual complications, and the enteric Gram negative bacilli are the most common pathogens in this condition. Contrarily, the clinical significance of fungal isolation in cirrhotic ascites remains controversial. In the present article, with the presentation of a clinical case, the authors review the clinical implications of the identification of Candida albicans in the ascitic fluid.
