JORGE, João Xavier et al. Manometric characteristics of lower esophageal sphincter in type 2 diabetes: Influence of age, duration of diabetes and glycemic control. J Port Gastrenterol. [online]. 2012, vol.19, n.2, pp.66-70. ISSN 0872-8178.

Introduction: The influence of age, disease duration and HbA1c levels on the lower esophageal sphincter’s motility of diabetic patients is not well known. The aim of this investigation is to understand the dynamics of the IES on type 2 diabetics. Material and methods: A esophageal manometry was performed to 36 diabetics between 39-81 years old. The motility of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) was evaluated. Data are shown as mean±standard error. Results: In the groups (<=60 years old and >60 years old), the basal pressure, percentage of relaxation (%), relaxation duration, the complete (CR), partial (PR) and absent (AR) relaxation of the were similar. Patients with over 10 years of diabetes had higher % 77.1±4.1 than those with 10 years or less 66.3±2.7; P<=7 vs HbA1c <=7 mmol/l, we verified that 23.4±2.03 vs 18.38±1.01; PP<=7 mmol/l. %R 77.6±4.0 vs 68.5±3.4, PR 41.13±9.3 vs 65.81±6.2, AR 3.93±2.1 vs 6.81±3.5 and 6.0±0.4 vs 7.3±0.6 were statistically similar (P>0.05). Conclusion: 1- The age didn’t influence the motility of the IES. 2- The %RLES was higher in patients with over 10 years of diabetes. 3- Diabetics with HbA1c <=7 mmol/l presented higher BP and CRLES
