JORGE, João Xavier et al. Manometric characteristics of the esophageal body in type 2 diabetic patients according to baseline morning glucose. J Port Gastrenterol. [online]. 2012, vol.19, n.5, pp.225-228. ISSN 0872-8178.

Introduction:Basal glycemia may influence the esophagus’ motor activity. Some authors refuse that possibility. Our objective is to contribute studying these phenomena. Patients and methods:Esophageal body’s motor activity was studied by stationary manometry in 25 type 2 diabetic patients aged between 44 and 81 years old (mean age 58,25 years old) with different fast glycemic levels. We’ve compared the characteristics of esophageal waves between diabetics with glycemia ≤7,0 mmol/l and > 7,0 mmol/l. Data were analyzed by SPSS17 Student t Test. Results:Features of esophageal waves in these 2 groups (glycemia≤7,1 mmol/l/vs glycemia> 7,0 mmol/l): peristaltic waves 84,9 vs 80,1; p>0,05; no transmitted waves 4,5 vs 16,3 p<0,01; retrograde waves 3,5 vs 2,0 p>0,05; simultaneous waves 6,2 vs 1,0 p > 0,05. We verified that wave amplitude (in mmHg), in 3 different channels (P), in these 2 groups (glycemia≤7,1 mmol/l/glycemia>7,0 mmol/l) were P1 - 32,3 vs 31,1 p > 0,05, P2 - 44,8 vs 44,2 p > 0,05; P3 - 49,2 vs 49,8 p > 0,05; mean amplitude 42,2 vs 41,7 p > 0,05. Wave_s velocity was similar between these 2 groups Conclusion:In the studied patients, we saw that the percentage of non-transmitted waves was significantly higher between patients with fast glycemia >7 mmol/l. Other characteristics of the esophageal waves didn’t reveal significant difference.
