In view of the intensification of mobility in contemporary societies and the new uses and consumption habits, low-density rural territories are emerging as alternative tourist destinations and differentiation for the development of tourist and leisure activities.

From data collected with questionnaires and focus group, this article aims to highlight the current forms of voluntary mobility involving urban consumers in the search tourist experiences, such as the growing interest in destinations in the inland - the Historical Villages of Portugal - and identify the residents' perception of the impact of tourism on communities.

The results obtained reveal that the destination is a space of refuge for short periods of leisure and tourism in contact with historical and cultural resources by the visitors. The perceptions of the tourism impacts are different in each village according to the interaction between visitors and residents.
