Abstract

MOREIRA, Maria João Guardado  and  PINHEIRA, Vítor. Gerontological plans as tools to support territorialized ageing policies: The case of Idanha-a-Nova. Forum Sociológico [online]. 2022, n.40, pp.35-47.  Epub July 29, 2022. ISSN 0872-8380.  https://doi.org/10.4000/sociologico.10460.

Demographic ageing in Portugal is a regionally distinct reality, whereby knowing the contexts of ageing is essential to promote policies and actions adjusted to the needs of populations and local development. The elaboration of the Gerontological Plan of Idanha-a-Nova started from these assumptions, using a mixed methodology: survey of needs through questionnaires, listening to the population to present the results and proposals for action, semi-structured interviews with local leaders, associations and IPSS. We highlight the weaknesses in the population’s education and income, in the interaction between institutions and services and in the response to some essential needs. Despite the weaknesses, the willingness of the population and local leaders to participate in the discussion and resolution of the problems should be highlighted. This Plan has already enabled changes, proving to be a replicable tool capable of contributing to the social innovation of the territories.

Keywords : gerontological plans; ageing; local development.
