AZEVEDO, Liliana. A country for old people? Migrations and ageing in Portugal. Forum Sociológico [online]. 2022, n.40, pp.73-84.  Epub 29-Jul-2022. ISSN 0872-8380.  https://doi.org/10.4000/sociologico.10567.

The article examines the relationship between demographic ageing and a set of migratory dynamics that have intensified in the last decade and contribute to that ageing: the return of retired Portuguese migrants, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the immigration of foreign retirees, mostly from Europe. Based on data from a variety of sources (literature, statistics and empirical research on the transition to retirement of Portuguese migrants in Switzerland), the article compares the reasons and conditions of settlement in Portugal of the two retired migrant groups. Aspects such as taxation, geographical distribution, health and economic impact are addressed, and similarities and differences between Portuguese and foreign retired migrants are highlighted. The article concludes that more research is needed on the multiple and complex intersections between ageing and migration, given the scarcity of studies on this subject in Portugal and the lack of scientific knowledge to support public policies.
