Abstract

DANTAS, Fagner. Rethinking patrimonialism: Still a way to understand the Brazilian State?. Forum Sociológico [online]. 2022, n.41, pp.15-24.  Epub Dec 30, 2022. ISSN 0872-8380.  https://doi.org/10.4000/sociologico.10732.

The present work seeks to discuss the current relevancy of “patrimonialism” as a concept to understand Brazilian reality. The theoretical approach emphasizes the historical perspective because the concept is seen as a practice that integrates the social and political evolution of Brazil. The methodological approach is based on a review of the main bibliography about the theme. However, not only the classical authors are used, but also the new thinkers. In the same direction, the bibliography revised reach the use of the concept on different national realities, showing its functionality on a global scale. As result, five “thesis” are presented to summarise the current debate about “patrimonialism”, demonstrating its analytical value, despite the authors who denies the importance of patrimonialism as an explanatory key of national ills.

Keywords : patrimonialism; State; developmentalism; Max Weber.
