Abstract

GOIS, Marcos Paulo Ferreira de  and  MONTEIRO, Leonardo José Iorio. Imagined nights in pandemic times: Navigating privileged spaces, empty landscapes, and regulated sociability in Rio de Janeiro. Forum Sociológico [online]. 2023, n.42, pp.13-24.  Epub July 31, 2023. ISSN 0872-8380.  https://doi.org/10.4000/sociologico.10971.

The aim of this proposal is to investigate images of sociability at night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Supported by a review of the specialized literature on nightlife and sociability and by the legal acts relating to the spread and containment of the virus, we discuss a set of policies and public discourses about Covid-19 and analyzed photos created by the media presenting nightlife between March 2020 and the first months of 2021. We concluded that social life at night had been one of the most relevant topics comprised in the press to discuss legal measures to contain the spread of the virus and its presentation in the media composes an imaginary about uses of spaces and behavior patterns, that coexist with a set of notions created about the night over the years. Finally, this discursive strategy dealt with specific scenarios of night sociability and its spatial ordering as examples to amplify this claim to the city.
