Abstract

This article focuses on the contemporary expressions of gentrification in the Lisbon metropolis and the extension of the phenomenon to the peripheral county of Almada. The research was conducted between 2019 and 2022, based on participating observation in the recently requalified spaces of the Cacilhas and Cova da Piedade territories, as well as semi-direct interviews to residents and ex-residents who recently have gone through situations of displacement, both direct and indirect displacement. Among the main results, it was found that for the people that manage to stay in these neighborhoods, they do so in worse housing conditions. For these residents there’s a loss in the sense of place, with a loss of meeting and consuming places, as a result of the recent requalification of public spaces and the restructuring of the commercial scene.
