Introduction:

Breastfeeding the baby of mothers with COVID-19 may be associated with risks of virus transmission through breast milk, justifying the adoption of safe practices.

Objectives:

To identify WHO recommendations on breastfeeding and Covid-19.

Methods:

Integrative literature review conducted in March 2020 on the WHO website using the descriptors “breast feeding”, “pregnancy”, “childbirth”, “health knowledge, attitudes, practice” and “COVID-19”.

Results:

There is evidence in seven WHO documents that in women with COVID 19 breastfeeding should be advised, since the virus was not found in samples of amniotic fluid or breast milk, however it is essential to support the mother to breastfeed with safety and with respiratory hygiene measures, wash the hands before and after touching the baby and hygiene of surfaces what she contacts.

Conclusions:

The scientific knowledge available on COVID-19 and breastfeeding is in constant evolution, and the health professionals should support breastfeeding and manage difficulties, taking all precautions in order to prevent and control the risk of infection.
