Abstract

MACHADO, Maria Isabel; ANDRADE, Ana  and  ALBUQUERQUE, Carlos. Relationship between physical activity and school performance in higher education students: integrative literature review. Mill [online]. 2021, n.esp9, pp.281-287.  Epub Dec 07, 2021. ISSN 0873-3015.  https://doi.org/10.29352/mill029e.21507.

Introduction:

Higher education students who participate in regular physical activities tend to demonstrate better attributes, such as increased brain activity, better concentration and energy levels, which can support greater cognitive development

Objective:

To analyze the relationship between physical activity and academic performance in higher education students

Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out. The selection of articles, with publication date between 2015-2020, was made on computer platforms, namely: PubMed and B-On. The analysis of the studies took into account the defined inclusion criteria.

Results:

The analysis of the articles that constituted the corpus of analysis of this integrative literature review (n = 3) indicates unanimity as to the fact that there is a relationship between the practice of physical activity and the academic performance of higher education students. The existence of a significant association between the level of moderate and vigorous physical activity and better academic performance was confirmed, compared to students with higher levels of physical inactivity.

Conclusion:

The results suggest that the practice of physical activity in higher education students is stimulated, as it promotes better school performance and consequently facilitates the development of their sensory, motor, cognitive and emotional skills.

Keywords : students; physical activity; school performance.
