The author of this paper looks at the influence that the works of E. Goffman and Howard S. Becker have had on the social sciences in Brazil, particularly in terms of the development of urban anthropology. He comments on his experience and contacts with the Chicago School, especially Goffman and Becker themselves, whose visits to Brazil he recounts. He mentioned those of their works that have been published in Brazil and points out the repercussions they have had. He also notes a few differences between the two of them, albeit within the interactionist tradition.
