This article begins by discussing the common characteristics of the welfare model employed in the various Southern European countries. It takes the stance that both macro-historic processes and social transformations have been decisive to the development of the model. The second part discusses the similarities between social protection, the job market and the family in the region, as well as the way in which these three aspects interrelate. The author concludes by underlining the importance of a model-based approach, but also argues for the need to develop specific approaches for each case. This is particularly important in the Southern European countries, where the way in which well-being is "produced" possesses a set of specific characteristics that have not yet been sufficiently studied in published works.
