This article sets out a number of analytical options for the study of individual artists’ career paths and the collective outcomes of the professional work done in theatrical groups, companies and projects. The objective is to offer a preliminary interpretation of the characteristics of the theatrical world in Portugal, particularly as regards two key aspects of the situation: on the one hand the artists, who are networked professionals, learn to manage the very varied experiences and the uncertainties of a profession without a safety net; on the other, theatre groups, which are preferably small, function as "turntables" and "artist nurseries", in a regime in which professionals must be polyvalent.
