This article looks at the South European exceptionalism thesis and takes immigration in Portugal as a basis for its discussion of the question. Against the overall background of the demographic and institutional context, the authors consider a number of indicators related to the integration of migrants into the labour market. They conclude that the diversity of the situations involved precludes any sort of generalisation.
