Abstract

GOMES, Maria do Carmo. Literexclusão na vida quotidiana. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2003, n.41, pp.63-92. ISSN 0873-6529.

The main objective of this article is to understand how people with low levels of formal scholastic qualifications deal with written information in their daily lives. Basing herself on a case study on the phenomenon of literacy in the context of primary-school-level adult education courses, the author looks at the procedural aspects of the day-to-day use of reading, writing and arithmetic. She explores the literacy practises that are employed, the situations in which basic skills are used, the obstacles that people come up against and the adaptive solutions that are recommended. Finally she puts forward the concept of literexclusion as one of the procedural faces of social exclusion.

Keywords : Literexclusion; literacy; basic skills; social exclusion.
