The present article centres on the study of people living alone in Portugal. On the basis of the census data for 2001 and 1991, an analysis is made of the development of domestic units with a single resident, comparisons are made at a European level and a description is given of the multiplicity and geographical distribution of the social profiles pertaining to the people that make up those units. The article also gives an account of the main expansion trends in the various profiles identified, proposing certain hypotheses as a basis for the sociological comprehension of this many-sided phenomenon.
