Abstract

FRANCO, Luísa. A process of social problematization: drugs in the newspaper Diário de Notícias (1974/1993). Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2004, n.46, pp.117-132. ISSN 0873-6529.

On the basis of an analysis and description of newspaper articles on drugs in Portugal, the notion of "public concern" is operationalized, a notion understood as essential in defining any social object as a social problem. Cycles of public concern identify social problematization processes with their own dynamics. Over twenty years, the paradigmatic transformations regarding defining and resolving the problem have been associated with transformation points in the process: "critical" or "controversial" periods.

Keywords : Social problems; press; drugs.
