Globalization, cosmopolitanism and identity are key-words to understanding the contemporary world. Though apparently contradictory, they are, in fact, complementary. This article discusses the re-writing of the history of Macau and the contextual nature of identity. We shall analyze the ethnicization process of the Macanese identity and the way in which its inclusion in both the Portuguese-speaking linguistic area and the political area with the Chinese formula of "one country, two systems" is co-ordinated and negotiated. A target of analysis will be the repercussions of these options on the recasting of reference points of Macanese identity.
