Abstract

GOMES, Maria do Carmo. Paths to literacy. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2005, n.47, pp.69-97. ISSN 0873-6529.

The key empirical object of the research work on which this article is based is pupils in adult education courses from the first cycle of basic education to ongoing education (CEA). Based on those pupils’ position in the structure of society - origins, social trajectories and ways of life - and their relationships to literacy in daily life, this article seeks to understand the ways in which learning is experienced in the context of ongoing education and its implications for the acquisition of basic reading, writing and computational skills in order to process written information contained in printed documents. An attempt is also made to understand the procedural aspects of the social phenomenon of literacy for those without formal schooling, and the theoretical and methodological developments which the use of qualitative techniques may bring to studies in this area.

Keywords : Literacy; basic skills; adult education.
