Abstract

GOMES, Adelino. The JUC, the Jornal Encontro and the first surveys of university youth: contributions to the history of modern social science in Portugal. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2005, n.49, pp.95-115. ISSN 0873-6529.

In Portugal, the 1950s saw the rise of a generation of Roman Catholic university students committed to observing and transforming social realities. They blazed the trails that would lead, with the advent of democracy, to the institutionalization of sociology in the country. Between the First JUC Congress in 1953, chaired by Adérito Sedas Nunes, and the publication of the results of the Second Large-scale College Youth Survey in 1967, connections are made in a triangle of which the other two sides are the Salazar regime and the Acção Católica - to which almost everyone was initially attached.

Keywords : "Jucistas"; Encontro; youth surveys; religious sociology.
