Abstract

MELO, Daniel. From the hills to the coastal towns: the Trás-os-Montes regional voluntary association movement in Portugal and in the Diaspora. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2006, n.50, pp.67-87. ISSN 0873-6529.

The aim of this article is to make a contribution to research on the regional association movement in the context of relationships between civil society and nation-state, by studying the transmontano (from the province of Trás-os-Montes) regional associations which exist in Portugal and in the Diaspora. The approach adopted here links the study of political and institutional action by regional association movements with the concepts of social capital and cultural identity. These are the structural supports for their agendas and the foundation for their representative position within the regionalist and voluntary association movements.

Keywords : Voluntary associations; social capital; cultural identity; regionalism.
