Abstract

DELICADO, Ana. Museums and the promotion of the scientific culture in Portugal. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2006, n.51, pp.53-72. ISSN 0873-6529.

This paper examines how museums and science centres are included in policies to promote a scientific culture in Portugal. It sets the Portuguese case against the backdrop of the establishment of scientific museums in Europe since the nineteenth century, while highlighting its specific characteristics. It pays particular attention to the use of the concept of scientific culture as a justification for setting up or developing museums, as well as to the role played by different agents and organizations in these processes.

Keywords : museums; science centres; scientific culture.
