Abstract

CARVALHEIRO, José Ricardo. From media representation to political reception: minority discourses. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2006, n.51, pp.73-93. ISSN 0873-6529.

The descendants of Cape Verdeans make up the first group of migrant origin having a large number of adults born in Portugal. Thus their discourses on recognition, inclusion or resistance in Portuguese society are particularly significant, and media reception provides a field for the enunciation of such issues. Based on interviews about their representation in the media, this text examines discourses of youngsters of Cape Verdean descent and their political implications, linking them with identity questions and conceiving media reception as being itself mediated by social and cultural contexts.

Keywords : media reception; identity politics; ethnicity; racialization.
