Abstract

BARROS, Myriam Moraes Lins de. The trajectory of aging studies in Brazil. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2006, n.52, pp.109-132. ISSN 0873-6529.

This article endeavours to trace the course of anthropological studies on aging carried out in Brazil since the 1970s and to present current discussions and their developments in research projects. Certain topics were selected within the field of studies on aging: social identity, memory, life courses, sociability, urban space, work and retirement, gender, family and the body. The historical picture sought to indicate the theoretical questions that have been emerging in the studies, accompanying the anthropological debates on contemporary society while showing the possible dialogue between anthropology and other areas of knowledge, on the one hand, and the social problems of Brazilian society itself, on the other.

Keywords : aging; Brazilian urban anthropology; memory.
