Abstract

PEIXOTO, João. Trafficking, smuggling and irregular immigration: the new contours of Brazilian immigration in Portugal. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2007, n.53, pp.71-90. ISSN 0873-6529.

This paper discusses some conceptual issues on the trafficking and smuggling of migrants, and presents evidence on recent Brazilian immigration, the smuggling of immigrants by organized networks and the trafficking of women for sexual exploitation from Brazil to Portugal. The growing importance of organized networks and the strengthening of sex industry-related business are among the main conclusions. However, the role of informal social networks and the variable degrees of exploitation, fraud and coercion have a blurring effect on the contours of migrants’ smuggling and trafficking from Brazil to Portugal.

Keywords : Brazilian immigration; Portugal; trafficking; smuggling.
