Abstract

WENDEN, Catherine Wihtol de. A suburbs tale. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2008, n.56, pp.37-59. ISSN 0873-6529.

This article analyses the history of the integration of immigrant populations in the suburbs of French cities. Using the events of autumn 2005 as a starting point, our analysis focuses on three periods, the last three decades, which are associated with different urban contexts, players and mobilisations. We also address the public policies in each period and conclude that no response was provided to most of the demands of these immigrants regarding measures favouring their recognition and social and civic participation. Most of the measures were short term and merely satisfied some electoral clienteles.

Keywords : immigration; suburbs; integration; autumn 2005; public policies.
