Abstract

VELHO, Gilberto. Gilberto Freyre: trajectory and singularity. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2008, n.58, pp.11-21. ISSN 0873-6529.

The work of Gilberto Freyre has been increasingly undergoing analysis and reassessment by various authors. There are different perspectives and points of view, connected with a diversity of research lines and areas of knowledge. What these efforts have brought into relief is the great complexity and richness of the work carried out by Freyre, whose education and trajectory have deserved an in-depth body of research. One of the most significant results of the latter work is the finding that labels and simplistic explanations for such an extensive and complex production need to be rejected. The focus also falls on the author’s relationship with the university system as well as on the importance and singularity of his work and the originality of his writings.

Keywords : Brazil; complexity; culture; Gilberto Freyre.
