Abstract

MACHADO, Nora. In the name of a dubious science: race and ethnic group in medical research. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2008, n.58, pp.23-46. ISSN 0873-6529.

This article shows that scientifically dubious categories such as “race” and “ethnic group” continue to be used in scientifically advanced countries such as the USA and, also, in northern and southern Europe. As the concept of race awakens negative historical associations, the notion of ethnic group is used as an equivalent in medical research, where genetic factors are acquiring ever greater importance.

Keywords : race; ethnicity; racialized medicine.
