Abstract

FERREIRA, Vítor Sérgio. Body-marking employment: the occupational realisation of an identity project. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2008, n.58, pp.71-108. ISSN 0873-6529.

With the recent liberalisation, higher evaluation and social exposure of the body in Western societies, the group of activities associated with producing body designs has become a profitable business. In the last two decades, Portugal has also seen its body-design production and marketing industry widely diversify and expand. Among the many products and services available, the practices of tattooing and/or body piercing have spread to an unprecedented degree. This has not only happened with the broadening of the social spectrum of its consumers but also with the proliferation of studios where they are carried out. In this context, body-marking jobs have not only become an image option in the body stylisation space of more and more young people, but also a real possibility for some of them on the job expectations horizon.

Keywords : young people; work; tattoos and body piercing; trajectories.
