Based on a survey of Portuguese researchers abroad, firstly this article aims to analyse the conditions that attracted them towards host countries and institutions and the circumstances that led them to leave Portugal. Secondly, the paper discusses the type of contacts expatriate researchers maintain with the Portuguese scientific system and their potential to foster return migration or the creation of diaspora networks.
