Abstract

BOMENY, Helena. Reading in Brazil, reading from Brazil. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2009, n.60, pp.11-32. ISSN 0873-6529.

This article reflects on reading in Brazil. The author argues that the lack of encouragement and late efforts to cultivate reading in Brazil accompanied the country’s historical difficulty in generalising access to education and, more recently, in improving the quality of available education. Although the habit of reading is closely related to formal education practices, it is not restricted to them. There are forms that need to be considered when the idea is to understand whether or not a country values a taste for reading. The article considers some of these possibilities.

Keywords : reading; education; lettered culture; tastes in literature.
