Abstract

CAMPOS, Ricardo. Youth and visuality in contemporary world: a brief reflection on the image in youth cultures. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2010, n.63, pp.113-137. ISSN 0873-6529.

Since the second half of late 20th Century youth has played a central role in the media agenda and in the political and scientific discourses, as a result of its increasing social visibility. The globalized and mediated processes of image production and consumption, promoted by cultural industries, have played a vital role in the ways youth is socially represented (and represents itself). In a society particularly submerged in image and visuality, it is particularly important the promotion of research programmes dedicated to the analysis of the connections between contemporary visual culture and the construction of youth representations. This is the main focus of this article, proposing a brief reflection upon this issue.

Keywords : youth; urban tribes; visual culture; image; graffiti.
