Abstract

RAPOSO, Otávio. “You’re a rapper, represent Arrentela, you’re from the Red Eyes Gang”: sociabilities and life styles of young people from the suburbs of Lisbon. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2010, n.64, pp.127-147. ISSN 0873-6529.

In Arrentela, Seixal, some young rap fans have created an informal group called the Red Eyes Gang with the aim of expanding their musical projects and developing the sense of belonging among themselves. Mainly black (of African immigrant families) and members of the lowest social classes in Portuguese society, the young people in the Red Eyes Gang make the rap style an instrument with which they can resignify a set of values, norms and ideologies related to their social environment, subverting the discourses that stigmatise them. In creating positive identities and developing a stylistic performance, they want to have the “right to a voice” and influence the shape of the society in which they live.

Keywords : young; life style; sociability; rap and hip-hop.
