Abstract

SILVEIRA, Liane. “I am her eyes”: nannies at the market, or an ethnography of images. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2015, n.77, pp.95-111. ISSN 0873-6529.  https://doi.org/10.7458/SPP2015773765.

This articleis the description of my ethnographic sociological interest in the universe of nannies. From the perspective of nannies, it is intended to comprise a portion of the dynamic that moves the world of motherhood.Emphasis is given to field work that was primarily conducted in a square located in a district of Rio de Janeiro’s wealthier southern zone. It therefore focuses on families in general and on families from Rio’s middle classes and elite in particular. But because the nannies live and move through a variety of locations, the ethnographic observation was extended to various parts of the city, reflecting the study’s ethnographic vocation.

Keywords : ethnography; nannies; maternity; complex societies.
