Abstract

ISSO, David; BECERRIL, Diego; MARTIN-LAGOS, M.ª Dolores  and  VENEGAS, Mar. "If only my mother had done for me what i’m doing for my daughter": the evolution of family participation in public schools in Spain. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2019, n.89, pp.33-52. ISSN 0873-6529.  https://doi.org/10.7458/SPP20198911740.

This paper presents results of a research on the role families play in the control, management and governance of free schools during the academic years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, in several schools in the county of Granada (Spain). Following a qualitative methodology, based on twelve personal in-depth interviews and eight discussion groups, the discourses allow to conclude that the families of students enrolled in Spanish free schools are more involved than before but there is still a long way to go. The paper also analyses the causes that, according to our data, may be producing this lack of effective family involvement in free school in Spain.

Keywords : family involvement; free school; School Board; school democracy.
