Abstract

WALL, Karin; CORREIA, Rita B.  and  GOUVEIA, Rita. Attitudes in relation to the parental leave. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2019, n.90, pp.55-76. ISSN 0873-6529.  https://doi.org/10.7458/SPP20199015525.

Public policies providing leave entitlements to care for dependent children have undergone important changes during the last decades. The aim of this article is to analyse the attitudes of the Portuguese population towards parental leave, using data from the ISSP Family and Gender Survey 2014. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives, we identify the factors which influence attitudes toward the length and sharing of leave. Findings reveal the impact of institutional context (current leave scheme), normative context and social positioning. The article analyses mismatches between policies and preferences and discusses the implications of results.

Keywords : parental leave; work-family balance; family policies; family and gender equality; social attitudes.
