Abstract

CASTRO, José; CAPUCHA, Luís  and  FERREIRA, Jorge Manuel Leitão. A historical analysis of the Portuguese child protection system: what lessons for the future?. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2023, n.102, pp.59-78.  Epub Oct 23, 2023. ISSN 0873-6529.  https://doi.org/10.7458/spp202310227209.

This article analyses the history of the Portuguese Child Protection System (CPS), mainly his relation with the Welfare State development, the affirmation of local power and the evolution of the social protection system that led to the approval of the Law of Protection of Children and Youth in Danger, in 1999. Considering the CPS history lessons and some significative trends of evolution of protection systems, at an international level, we analyze the present situation of the system, from dimensions like the general orientation, the system organization, and the workforce, to envision its future.
