Resumen

JIN, Yangmin  y  GOMEZ-PELLON, Eloy. Acculturation and intergenerational: case studies of relations in families of Chinese immigrants in Portugal. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2023, n.102, pp.99-121.  Epub 23-Oct-2023. ISSN 0873-6529.  https://doi.org/10.7458/spp202310227098.

This article aims to examine the cultural changes and intergenerational conflicts within the families of Chinese immigrants who have arrived in Portugal since the 1990s. For these purposes, we have applied a case study to five immigrant families from the Zhejiang province of China. It is concluded that parents and children acculturate at different levels in Portuguese society, resulting in an “acculturation gap”. However, it is observed that conflicts between parents and children, which harm family cohesion, and complex intergenerational relationships are not only effects of this acculturation gap but are also related to the immigrants’ life trajectories.

Palabras clave : acculturation; intergenerational relationship; Chinese immigrant families; family conflicts; Portugal..
