Abstract

MARINHO, Sofia. The family, children and parenting in the news debate: shared residence as law. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2023, n.103, pp.105-125.  Epub Jan 31, 2024. ISSN 0873-6529.  https://doi.org/10.7458/spp202310329492.

Drawing on mixed content analysis of newspaper articles, the article investigates the representation of family, children, and parenting practices in news stories about making shared residency (SR) a law. Opponents of SR used the traditional model of parenting and family to evoke the dangerous, ideal, privatised family; the at-risk child; the dangerous and inadequate father; and the at-risk mother. Drawing on egalitarianism, supporters portrayed the egalitarian, unequal, changing family; the relational, rights-bearing child; the discriminated, caring, reconstructed father; and the dangerous, change-resistant, overburdened mother.

Keywords : shared residence as law; legislative change; change representations of parenting and the family; single residence..
