Abstract

GOLDMAN, Marcio. Alterity and experience: Anthropology and ethnographic theory. Etnográfica [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.1, pp.161-173. ISSN 0873-6561.

Starting from the concept of experience, as proposed by Godfrey Lienhardt in the beginning of the sixties, this paper intends to discuss the singularity of the anthropological perspective. This is done by confronting the nature of the knowledges the anthropologist applies with those hold by the people she or he works with. The main point is to demonstrate that the singularity of the anthropological work lies is the construction of ethnographic theories that cannot be assimilated to native theories or to possible scientific theories.

Keywords : belief; experience; history of anthropology; religion; anthropological theory; ethnographic theory.
