Abstract

LEIRNER, Piero de Camargo. On “soldier’s nicknames”: military classifications and terminology. Etnográfica [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.1, pp.195-214. ISSN 0873-6561.

In this article I intend to discuss how is built in the military world a single terminology, witch widely calls up symbolic resources intending to delimitate their frontiers in relation to the “outside world”. Thus, theirs classifications are realized pointing toward a hierarchical construct on the concepts of reality. Such hierarchy widely determines their reality, from a “military worldview” to the construction of the soldier’s persona, that is done by an intense process of socialization, in witch one of this marks is the acquisition of a “soldier’s nickname”. At last, I note how the nomination process encompasses military collectivities and war machines, including here codenames for actions and weapons.

Keywords : military; war; naming; nicknames; hierarchy; weaponry.
