Abstract

MARQUES, Vera Lúcia Maia. Muslims in Brazil. Etnográfica [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.1, pp.31-50. ISSN 0873-6561.

In a contemporary perspective, I have centered my efforts, through interviews, field observations, other researches and different kinds of data sources, in order to understand the Islamic religious universe, placing my attention not only on migrant Muslims but also on converted Muslims. The goal is to understand cultural and religious differences contained in their practice. Thus, the present article intends to present the Muslims in Brazil in some of their practical aspects: the use of hijab, September 11, media, spread of Islam, conflicts and integration.

Keywords : Islam; Muslims; conversion; practice; difference; conflicts.
