Abstract

GOMES, Bruno Ramos  and  ADORNO, Rubens de Camargo Ferreira. Becoming “noia”: trajectory and social suffering in the “uses of crack” in the city centre of São Paulo. Etnográfica [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.3, pp.569-586. ISSN 0873-6561.

This text reflects on the trajectories of subjects of different ages who have come to occupy specific areas of the historic city center of São Paulo, in Brazil, around the use of crack. From the ethnographic observation made in the last five years in “Cracolândia” and from reports of some of these homeless people who make heavy use of crack, we intend to understand the trajectories of users in the process of “becoming noia” and the agency devices they use in their daily life seeking preservation and survival in the places where drug use occurs, and dealing with the social suffering resulting from this condition.

Keywords : territories; crack; trajectory; social suffering; harm reduction.
