Abstract

LUNA SALES, Ana Paula. Love for sale?: Escorting ritualizations among the prostitutes of the Granada restaurant. Etnográfica [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.1, pp.147-163. ISSN 0873-6561.

This article is based on my first ethnographic work, which took place at the Granada restaurant, a space mainly dedicated to prostitution practices in downtown Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Taking sides on the female perspective, I focus here on the form of the escort, understood as the ensemble of relationships established between meninas (emic category for prostitutes) and clients. In this sense I analyse the space-time determinants of such relationships, the bodily practices imposed on them and the entailing conceptions. Therefore, escorting is apprehended as a ritual involving in its three phases (approach, talk and sex) strong prescriptions that restrain and contrast the relationship patterns of the meninas inside and beyond Granada’s context.

Keywords : prostitution; escort; ritual.
