Abstract

FRUGOLI JR., Heitor. June festivities in Lisbon: an ethnography centred in Bairro Alto. Etnográfica [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.1, pp.77-98. ISSN 0873-6561.

Many neighbourhood associations participate in the popular festivities organized in Lisbon every June. The events of that period activate representations of different kinds, including those related to the imagination of popular urban neighbourhoods. The article emphasizes this aspect drawing on fieldwork carried out in Bairro Alto. Observation and interaction in this and other areas in Lisbon, mainly during the preparation for the festivities of 2011 and the contest shows where local representatives from each neighbourhood perform, lead to the interrogation of the meanings of such experiences in a place with a popular dimension but simultaneously associated to an intense night life that generates different “external” representations.

Keywords : neighbourhood; festivities; popular marches; relationships; representation; performance.
